Update On Our Afghan Families

Greetings HeArt House Friends!

Today begins our blogging journey. Sharing with you the trials and joys of helping refugee families make homes for themselves in the US. Since the formation of HeArt House, we’ve been able to secure housing for three Afghan families.

This past weekend was a scramble to get some basics donated and set-up at two of the houses. In the bitter Philadelphia cold, walking my itinerant dog just as the sun was rising, we came across two very gently used, but lovely sofas. A hand written sign indicated that they were “free” - how ironic I thought, just as the US helped to “free” these Afghans from their disastrous situation in Kabul. A call was immediately placed to my dear friend Mohammad, who miraculously seems to be able to get nearly anything done for his beloved people. My pup and I guarded the sofas for 45 minutes until “the movers” arrived. But they showed up in a Prius! Despite a concerted effort to stuff those beasts into the car, it was decided that they would carry them 2 blocks to my house and store on the sidewalk there until a van could be secured. At least I could watch them from the warmth of my living room. They used my 20 foot dog leash to secure one to the top of the car. The pics tell the story of the “recovered” sofas and give you a glimpse into what it takes to build a HeArt House.
